Charlie and Sam were not aware of the amazing adventure they were about to embark on as they prepared for their safari in Tanzania. The Ngorongoro Conservation area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and boasts a huge volcanic caldera—the Ngorongoro Crater (meaning “big hole” in the local dialect). Their guide explained that a caldera is a crater formed after a volcanic eruption and the ground collapses beneath it. As well, the chances of seeing “The Big 5” animals (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and cape buffalo) all in one day were very high. They began their journey tingling with excitement of what they may see. The drive down was both exhilarating and time consuming as there are no paved roads and many hairpin turns, yet the scenery was breathtaking.

Once they reached the crater, they started taking pictures! There was so much to snap—game wandering and grazing in their natural habitat, the beautiful horizon and of course, the crater itself!  As they made their way across the crater, a herd of gazelle wandered past, grazing here and there as they went by. A short distance away, a giant flock of flamingoes could be seen in the central lake. Their pink feathers stood out brightly against the blue of the lake and sky. Their truck was moving closer towards the lake when it suddenly slowed and then completely stopped. The guide turned around and excitedly pointed out 6 lions walking beside them! They lazily padded by and stopped to enjoy the shade that the van created. As there is very little tree growth inside the crater to provide shade, the lions seemed content to stay! Charlie and Sam’s excitement was in overdrive.  They opened their window to get a better look and take tons of close up pictures.  They could almost reach down and touch them!  One of the lions was even using the step on their truck as a head rest.  Their guide stressed the importance of not disturbing them as this is a wildlife preserve and it is their job to make sure all the game remain safe, as well as the passengers.  Almost 2 hours passed while the lions kept them hostage as they napped and lounged on the shady side of the truck.

On their way back to the lodge, they excitedly discussed their unforgettable experience. As they arrived at the end of their safari, the beautiful orange sunset over the crater provided a perfect end to that fantastic day.

The beautiful and breath-taking coastline of southeastern Australia is the location of Charlie and Sam’s latest adventure! The duo’s travels began when they boarded a helicopter in the Mount Gambier area. Eagerly anticipating what the day had in store, they settled into their seats and donned their head sets. A rumble arose from below, as the helicopter began to take flight. Ascending higher into the sky, The Crater Lakes came into view. As they began to fly east, the sheer exquisiteness of the terrain became evident. It wasn’t long until the chopper was gliding over Blue Lake. Given the time of year, the lake was eye-catching. Cobalt blue in colour, the water was vibrant and striking. Continuing east, Charlie and Sam soon found themselves above Umpherston Sinkhole. Also known as The Sunken Garden, Umpherston’s Sinkhole was created when the top chamber of a cave collapsed. Now, the floor of the sinkhole lends home to beautiful flora and fauna. From above, the walls of the sinkhole are plastered with vines, and the various greens of the floor vegetation are in contrast with one another. Leaving the first two landmarks of their journey behind, the pair settled into their seats as they headed for the coast.

Stretching 243 kilometres in distance, Australia’s Great Ocean Road hugs some of the most scenic coast lines in the world. As the helicopter approached the coast, Charlie and Sam eagerly anticipated the panoramic views as the road winds along cliff tops, up to breathtaking headlands, down onto the edge of beaches, across river estuaries and through lush rainforests. Flying eastward along Ship Wreck Coast, they caught a glimpse of Loch Ard Gorge. Charlie and Sam peered out the windows of the chopper and took in the stunning scenery. The helicopter seemed to move in a weaving pattern, as if to mimic the coastal rock patterns below. Advancing quickly, the Twelve Apostles were soon below them. Carved out of the headland by the fierce waves of the Southern Ocean; these limestone stacks rise majestically from the shore below. The helicopter circled the area as the pair enjoyed a bird’s eye view of these famous natural wonders.

Leaving The Apostles behind, the helicopter veered away from the coast in search of beautiful untouched rainforests. Hovering over Great Otway National Park, they could hear the roar of waterfalls below the lush rainforest canopy. Charlie and Sam imagined hundreds of koalas peacefully dozing in gum trees just beneath the awning created by the dense rainforest vegetation. Returning to coast, the duo was on the last leg of their journey. In the distance, perched on towering sea cliffs where Bass Strait and the Southern Ocean collide stood Cape Otway Lighthouse. The oldest in mainland Australia, this lighthouse has been providing mainland Australia with light since 1848. Approaching Apollo Bay Harbour, Charlie and Sam watched as the sun set on the harbour, and on their day.

As Charlie and Sam flew over the many fascinating European countries, they were in for a real treat on their next adventure to Switzerland. What a perfect adventure for the two chocolate lovers! This adventure to Switzerland was occurring during the best time of year thus, they were ab out to witness some of the most impressive bright and magical Christmas markets in the world.

They started their journeys along the shore of Lake Geneva, where the Montreux’s Christmas market was under way. Charlie and Sam were intrigued by the sweet smells flowing through the air and the carols being beautifully sung in German and French.

“How enchanting”, Sam thought to himself as he picked up a uniquely beautifully designed snow globe with the Chillon Castle, a very popular Swiss monument, and purchased it to take home as a souvenir. He felt an instant connection to the snow globe as he held it up to compare it to the real Chillon Castle situated on the Lake Geneva in his near view.

Sam was a little fixated with experiencing the chocolate train tour.

“Are you finished with this market yet? Charlie, we are supposed to board the chocolate train at 6pm”, Sam warned him anxiously.

Charlie too, was excited and gathered the few extra things he thought Sam would regret not getting when they returned home from their travels.

“Charlie look, It’s here, quickly let’s get on”, Sam shouted over the noisy sound of the train coming to a stop on the tracks to pick up the chocolate tour passengers.

As they boarded the vintage designed trains, Charlie and Sam were greeted by friendly and polite staff that spoke English and exchanged their boarding passes for some chocolatey treats and a brochure as they took their seats very excited. They both were not concerned with the scenery outside the train because they were completely captivated with all the cool things taking place on this chocolate train.

Charlie and Sam enjoyed a very wide selection of deliciously decadent chocolates, they learned all about the process of making them while they cheerfully chatted with the other passengers on board.

Until Charlie and Sam’s next adventure, where will it take them next!

Heat, heat and more heat! The temperature was a blistering 48°C and the sun had yet to reach its peak. After preparing for the day with some sunscreen and hats, Charlie and Sam loaded up their bags and set out on camel back – expecting the unexpected from their Arabian Desert adventure. Not too long into the journey, the pair quickly found out how uncomfortable riding a camel can be; and although covered by a couple of blankets, a hump is still a hump. The rhythmic sway of the camel created a rocking motion, quite similar to that of a boat at sea. At times the motion could be quite smoothing, while at others, it made the pair feel almost seasick.

Despite the beads of sweat rolling down their faces from the sun beating down over head, Charlie and Sam were mesmerized by what they saw. Miles and miles of undulating sand dunes stretched across the landscape as far as their eyes could see. Hints of yellows, pinks and oranges blended together to create a divine panorama – almost like a snapshot from a postcard. At times, the harsh midday light overhead made the colours appear to swirl together, as if bottled for sand art.

As the camels swayed along, the faint sound of voices came into ear shot. As the voices drew closer, so did the sound of a rumble. An exploration vehicle came bursting over the dunes in the distance. Charlie and Sam watched as the vehicle raced through the sand, maneuvering in zig-zag patterns and bursting through small dunes at every chance the driver had. Within a few minutes, the vehicle was out of sight. The pair continued on their camelback journey until darkness began to creep up on them. Deciding it was time to settle for the night, Charlie and Sam dismounted their camels and prepared for a night in the desert.

As the darkness set in, the temperature began to drop, and although hovering around 30°C, it felt extremely chilly compared to the scorching temperatures of the day. Charlie and Sam lay down on the warm sand and looked up at the stars. Quietness filled the air. They were the only people around for miles. The two were consumed by the surreal feeling of isolation as the moonlight trickled down from the sky like beacons of light – illuminating the landscape all around them.

Eager to begin the next leg of their adventure, Sam raced across the platform to the boarding line for the train. Next to board, he excitedly looked around for Charlie. It wasn’t too long before she strolled up beside him. The two took one last glance around before leaving the mountainous Tuscany region of Florence behind, and heading for Venice.

While visiting Florence Charlie and Sam had immersed themselves in the rich culture of this Renaissance city – touring through some of Italy’s best museums, beautiful cathedrals and churches, and compelling streets and squares lined with classic buildings, shops and statues. But now they were en route to the coast. The city of Venice held a great deal of allure with its famous maze of canals and marble churches. The pair were looking forward to riding on a gondola, exploring the city from the Grand Canal, and sitting waterfront while savouring tiramisu and sipping espresso.

Staring out the window, Charlie and Sam watched as the landscape passed by, the changes in elevation made for a scenic ride. At its first stop in Bologna several passengers got off. A few moments passed, and the train still had yet to depart from the platform. It wasn’t too long before the conductor was advising people to leave the train. Disembarking from the train, Charlie and Sam stood on the platform alongside other passengers, all puzzled as to what the reasoning was behind clearing the train. A few moments later, they received word of a power outage at the next station over; therefore there would be a disruption in service until further notice. Deciding to embrace the opportunity, the duo quickly left the train station and journeyed into the city of Bologna.

“So what now?” asked Sam, feeling a little unsure. Charlie didn’t know much about the city, but she knew Bologna to be famous for the Two Towers and porticoes. Glancing ahead she saw Piazza XX Settembre.

“Let’s start here,” said Charlie, and the two friends embarked on yet another exciting adventure.

Charlie and Sam’s Adventure to the Big Island

The electrifying and effortlessly beautiful landscape of the “Big Island” in Hawaii, makes for an extraordinary adventure.  With breathtaking sunsets that give the gorgeous turquoise water a magnificent backdrop, it was sure to be an adventure for Charlie and Sam. The Big Island offers an array of hot, warm and cold climates. One of the most interesting being the tundra climate, where you will find brilliant snow-capped mountains in certain seasons. Who can forget the continuously wet climate with the stunning tropical rainforests? Sam was more interested in staying within the warmer climate regions because they were not prepared for the cold weather.

Charlie and Sam landed at the Hilo International Airport which is located on the east side of the “Big Island”. Here is where they met their tour guide named Kamea, who was a strikingly tall man, dressed in shorts and a flora printed t-shirt, carrying two fresh flower leis. He greeted them with a warm Aloha and placed these two leis over Charlie’s and Sam’s necks. Almost immediately Charlie and Sam felt like they were in paradise.

As they began their travels, looked from side to side astonished with the beautiful scenery that surrounded. Charlie and Sam discovered that his name meant “The One and Only”, and that most Hawaiian names had very powerful meanings. Kamea was more than happy to share all the historical and cultural contexts through their journey while, Charlie and Sam attempted to digest the intriguing but substantial information.

There first stop was an extremely wet tropical rainforest in Hilo. Where an overabundance of lush greenery covered most of the rainforest with vines that wrapped all the way around these 100 feet tall trees. They walked along the paths in the rainforest as their boots were almost fully immersed in water as they splashed around in amusement. Charlie and Sam stopped many times along their walk to look at the tiny exotic creatures living in their natural habitat. As they wrapped up there enchanted walk through the rainforest of Hilo, they couldn’t wait to find out what their next stop would be!

Charlie and Sam were mesmerized as they drove closer and closer catching just a glimpse of the volcanoes spewing magma. When they finally arrived within full view of the volcanoes, Charlie thought to himself how terrific but terrifying the volcanoes looked.  They both stood speechless as they looked up in awe at the tremendous volcanoes which seemed to be in a constant process of creation and destruction. As the night wore on and the sky began to darken the contrast of the magma against the pitch black sky made this scene the most magical sight Charlie and Same set their eyes on in a while! What a thrilling experience of the Volcanoes National Park!!

The next morning Charlie and Sam woke up and started preparing for their next adventure.

“Where are we off to next” Charlie asked Sam with excitement filling his voice. As the two friends continued their travel through the Big Island.
