ADVENTURE #4

Jokingly, Sam suggested to Charlie that they should drop everything, pack a bag and head to the airport to start a new adventure.  Charlie did just that and an hour later they were laughing with excitement in the back of a cab on the way to the airport to take whatever flight they could catch.

And that’s how they arrived in Budapest, Hungary.  The Pearl of The Danube is really 2 mini cities: Buda in the west and Pest in the East with the Danube separating the two.  The 2 cities are joined by several bridges, the most famous being the Chain Bridge, the first permanent suspension bridge which was built in Hungary during the 19th century.  It is supported by 2 towers only and massive iron chains.  Hence the name of the bridge.

Budapest is also called the City of Spas because it is the largest spa city in the world.  There are over 120 thermal springs in the city.  Charlie and Sam decided to relax at one of the most famous thermal baths:  The Gellert Baths.  Opened in 1918 in the Art Nouveau style, it houses several thermal baths, saunas and pools.  Magnificent Roman-style columns, colourful mosaic floors and walls and beautiful stained-glass windows make this the most visited spa in Budapest.   As Charlie and Sam were swimming in one of the pools it began to fizz with tiny bubbles.  It felt like they were swimming in a glass of bubbly champagne!

With so much to see, such as Buda Castle, Fisherman’s Bastion, Parliament House and Matthias Church and more, Charlie and Sam stopped by the grand Café Gerbeaud for some sweet sustenance. The historical building features a castle like façade and an interior all in gold, marble and dark wood.  They were excited to sample some of the exquisite pastries hoping to be inspired by new tastes and flavours.  Charlie and Sam ordered the Dobosh torte—5 layers of sponge cake, chocolate buttercream with a hardened caramel topping as well as the famous Gerbeaud cake—light and airy cake between scrumptious layers of a mixture of apricot jam, ground walnuts and rum.  Charlie and Sam were very impressed with their selections and discussed possible ways of incorporating some of these new taste sensations into their own yummy creations.

Until Charlie & Sam's next adventure… where will it take them?
