ADVENTURE #10

Charlie and Sam had no idea of the adventure awaiting them as they prepared for their safari in TANZANIA. Their destination: the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera—the Ngorongoro Crater (meaning “big hole” in the local dialect).

Their guide explained how the crater had formed after a massive eruption, the ground collapsing inward to create this natural wonder. Even more thrilling was the possibility of seeing “The Big Five”—lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and Cape buffalo—all in a single day. Charlie and Sam tingled with excitement as their jeep navigated the hairpin turns leading down into the crater, surrounded by breathtaking scenery at every curve.

Once inside, they quickly began snapping pictures. Wild game grazed freely, the horizon stretched endlessly, and the crater itself stood as a backdrop of timeless beauty. A graceful herd of gazelle passed nearby, while in the distance, a lake shimmered with the pink glow of thousands of flamingoes.

But the real surprise came when the jeep slowed to a halt. Their guide pointed, eyes wide—six lions were walking right beside them! The lions padded lazily by, finally stopping to lounge in the rare shade cast by the vehicle. To Charlie and Sam’s amazement, one lion even rested its head on the truck’s step, practically close enough to touch. Cameras clicked furiously as their guide reminded them to stay quiet—this was the lions’ home, after all.

For nearly two hours, the pair sat “hostage” in the crater, watching the lions nap peacefully at arm’s length. It was an experience unlike anything they had ever imagined.

As they finally drove back toward the lodge, the day ended in a blaze of colour—an orange sunset over the crater, the perfect finale to an unforgettable safari.
